I'm a PhD Candidate researching the history and philosophy of biology and the role of values in science. Specifically, I work on the relationship of biological theories to phylogenetic inference: how systematists use theories about causes to reconstruct what has been the pattern of the history of life. My historical work centers on early 19th century biological classification and the philosophies of science of William Whewell and John Stuart Mill. I investigate the role of social values in science in the contexts of conservation biology and biomedical research. I have a BA in philosophy and a BS in biology from the University of Maryland.
